Snug Harbor Wedding Photography: A Photographer's Guide to Staten Island's Garden Campus
October 25, 2026 · 2 min read
Snug Harbor Cultural Center & Botanical Garden sits on Richmond Terrace on Staten Island's North Shore, an 83-acre campus of gardens and 19th-century Greek Revival buildings. We've photographed there, and it rewards couples who plan their portraits around the gardens as much as the event space.
The gardens
The New York Chinese Scholar's Garden gives you rock formations, moon gates and koi ponds that frame portraits without much setup. The Tuscan Garden adds formal paths and warm stone, and the Secret Garden's hedge maze works well for playful couple photos. Each garden has a different scale, so we plan which one fits each part of the day instead of trying to shoot them all.
The Greek Revival halls
The row of columned buildings along Richmond Terrace is the campus's signature look. Wide portraits on the front steps read as classic and formal, and the columns give clean lines for wedding party photos.
Light and seasons
Spring and early summer bring the gardens to their peak, and fall color softens the backgrounds. Open shade in the gardens is easier on skin tones in midday sun, while the building fronts photograph best when the light is lower in the day. In winter we lean on the architecture and indoor spaces.
Planning and permits
Snug Harbor sets its own rules for photography and events, including permits for professional shoots and which areas are open on a given day. Confirm the current rules with Snug Harbor and your event planner before you book a session or build your timeline, and leave time to walk between gardens.
Getting there from New Jersey
For New Jersey couples, Snug Harbor is a short drive over the Bayonne Bridge. Build traffic into your timeline, and give guests clear parking directions.
