It sits up on the ridge of the Watchung Mountains, high enough that on a clear day the skyline reads sharp and complete rather than distant and hazy.
The overlook
The main overlook plaza is the reason most couples come here — a paved viewing area with an unobstructed line to Manhattan, roughly thirteen miles away as the crow flies. It's popular for a reason: few other spots in North Jersey give this clean a skyline view without a long drive or a trip into the city itself. For the overlook, sunset is the clear choice — the skyline lights up as the sky goes gold and then blue, and that transition is where the most striking frames come from. For the wooded sections, midday actually works well, since dense tree canopy softens direct sun into a diffused, even light that a skyline shot doesn't have access to. A session that starts in the woods in the afternoon and ends at the overlook for sunset uses both halves of the park at their best.
Parking
The overlook's parking area is small relative to how popular the spot is, especially on clear-weather weekend evenings when everyone has the same golden-hour idea. We recommend arriving 15–20 minutes before your scheduled session time to park and walk over without cutting into your light.
