Liberty State Park is Hudson County's most requested outdoor location for a reason: it's one of the only spots in New Jersey where you can put the Statue of Liberty, the lower Manhattan skyline, and open green space all within a fifteen-minute walk of each other. Here's how we use it.
Liberty Walk: the Statue of Liberty shot
The park's Liberty Walk promenade runs along the water with a straight, unobstructed sightline to the Statue of Liberty — this is the shot most couples have in mind when they ask about the park specifically. It works at almost any time of day, though midday sun tends to be harsh and flat here; we generally recommend late afternoon into golden hour for softer light on your faces without losing the statue in silhouette.
The Jersey City skyline side
Turn around from the Liberty Walk view and you're facing Jersey City's own waterfront skyline — a completely different backdrop, and one that comes alive at blue hour once building lights are on. A single engagement session here can realistically cover both directions if we plan the timing around sunset.
Open lawns & the Empty Sky Memorial
Away from the water, the park's open lawns give softer, more intimate portrait options without a skyline competing for attention, and the Empty Sky 9/11 Memorial area adds a striking architectural line for couples who want something more graphic than a landscape shot. We'll usually walk a couple through two or three of these spots in a single session rather than staying in one location the whole time.
Parking & timing
The park has designated parking areas, and on weekends — especially during wedding and graduation-photo season in spring and early summer — it fills up faster than out-of-towners expect. We recommend building in extra arrival time and, where possible, scheduling sessions on weekday evenings when the park is quieter and the light is just as good.
